American Electric Power (AEP) offers grants to nonprofits in communities with major AEP facilities. Focus areas include: early childhood through higher education, the environment, basic human services (such as hunger, housing, health and safety), art, music and cultural heritage. The AEP Teacher Vision grants support projects with an academic focus and a goal to improve student achievement. Awards up to $500 each; the deadline is Feb. 26.

North Carolina

The Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation is committed to improving the quality of life of all the people of North Carolina. The foundation provides grants to nonprofit organizations that address one of the following focus areas: education, community economic development and the environment. The foundation invests in statewide, regional, and community-based organizations that are dedicated to building an inclusive, sustainable, and vibrant state. The upcoming deadline for online applications is Aug. 3.


The Abell Hanger Foundation supports benevolent, charitable or educational undertakings, and makes grants to organizations involved in education, health services, human services, and the community. Applicants must be tax exempt under Section 501(c)(3). National organizations with significant operations in or providing material benefits to the citizens of Texas will be considered based on the degree of operations within Texas. The foundation accepts grant applications only from the 57-county West Texas area. Rolling deadlines; Awards vary.
