Private Funder: Ameriprise Financial; Opportunity: Community Relations Grants; Funding Focus: Hunger, homeless community development, job training, low-income families, environment; Geographic Focus: National (where the company has a presence); Eligibility: Nonprofits (programs which support afterschool feeding programs are encouraged to apply); Funding: The minimum grant request is $5,000; Deadlines: Jan. 15 and May 15.

Summary: Company seeks to improve communities where it has operations. Ameriprise will consider virtually any type of funding supported by its employees or retirees. There are three key priorities: meeting basic needs (hunger, housing and job training organizations should apply under this category); supporting community vitality; and volunteer-driven causes. Volunteer-driven grants are intended to recognize the many nonprofits serving Ameriprise communities and have caught the interest of its employees. Status calls or e-mails aren’t allowed. Ameriprise will respond to applicants in writing within three months of the deadline date. Start-ups are not eligible for these grants.
