Funder Seeking Applications for Civic Engagement Grants

Private Funder: Applied Materials Foundation; Opportunity: Applied Materials Foundation grants; Funding Focus: Education, civic engagement, the arts and the environment; Geographic Focus: National, focus on California and where company has operations; Eligibility: Nonprofits and schools; Funding: Multiple awards up to $1.3 million each (it gave about $7.4 million in grants last year); Deadline: June 15.

Summary: The foundation directs approximately 50% of grants to education, 25% to civic engagement, 10% to arts & culture and 15% to environmental awareness and sustainability.

Grants are made for one year and may be renewed for up to two additional years. Generally, Applied Materials and the foundation support programs or projects based in, or directed toward, a city or region where Applied Materials has operations.

The majority of K-12 education grants are directed to neighborhoods with the greatest need. Priority goes to projects which focus on traditional skills such as reading, writing, math, science and technology, and other subjects preparing young people for entering the workforce. For example, the foundation gave $250,000 to the San Jose Unified School District, San Jose, CA, to close the student achievement gap and $52,800 to SOS Children’s Villages-USA, Washington, DC, (www.sos-usa.org) for a children’s custodial care program. Partnerships are key to winning a foundation grant.
