grants2Private Funder: Frost Foundation; Opportunity: 2016 program grants; Funding Focus: Education, human service needs, youth and the environment; Geographic Focus: Louisiana and New Mexico; Eligibility: Nonprofits in those two states may apply (the foundation will consider requests for operating grants; start with a one-page summary); Funding: Awards vary; the foundation distributed about $1.2 million in grants last year; Deadline: June 1.

Summary: The foundation’s efforts are directed primarily to support exemplary organizations that can generate positive change beyond traditional boundaries. Priority is given to programs that have the potential for wider service or educational exposure than an individual community. The foundation encourages collaborations, mergers and the formation of alliances among agencies within the community to reduce duplication of effort. The partnerships should also promote the most effective use of funds.

Schools can benefit. For example, the foundation recently gave a $130,000 grant to the Rio Grande School, Santa Fe, NM, for general K-12 support and $15,000 to the Santa Fe School for the Arts for a K-12 arts education program.
