Walmart, NFWF Acres for America to Launch

Funders: Nat’l Fish & Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) and Walmart Stores, Inc.; Opportunity: 2016 Acres for America; Funding Focus: Environment, conservation; Geographic Focus: National; Eligibility: Nonprofits; Funding: $35 million for multiple awards (at least a 1:1 match is required); Deadline: TBA (last year’s application deadline was Aug. 4).

Summary: Last fall, Walmart and NFWF announced a 10-year, $35 million renewal of the Acres for America program. Look for the next round to be released soon. The program provides funding for projects to conserve important habitat for fish, wildlife and plants through purchasing property. The goal of the Acres for America program is to offset the footprint of Walmart’s domestic facilities on at least an acre-by-acre basis through these purchases.

Priorities are:

  1. Providing access for people to enjoy the outdoors;
  2. Conserving critical habitats for birds, fish, plants and wildlife;
  3. Connecting existing protected lands to unify wild places and protect migration routes; and,
  4. Ensuring the future of rural economies that depend on forestry, ranching and recreation.

Although this is a conservation program, youth and student projects have won support in the past. The funders gave $100,000 to the city of Chicago for the Hegewisch Marsh Restoration project. The project engaged volunteers, students, and job trainees in restoration, outreach and educational training.
