Writer’s Foundation Provides Services Grants

stephen-kingJust a quick reminder about the upcoming deadline for the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation, which focuses on strengthening and supporting communities throughout the state of Maine. The final 2015 deadlines are June 30 and Dec. 31.

The foundation provides grants of $500 to $50,000 for community-based projects that address the underlying causes of social and environmental problems, as well as those that address the consequences. Priority is given to nonprofit organizations that promote literacy, provide community services, or focus on the arts.arts

Eligibility: Nonprofits (No applications will be considered from any organization without 501(c)(3) status, unless the applicant is a town, fire or emergency aid department or school system with tax-exempt status). Requests should not exceed $50,000; last year the foundation distributed about $3.3 million in grants.

The foundation provides a limited funding for homeless programs and for seniors. For example, the foundation gave $50,000 to the Shaw House in Bangor, the city’s only emergency shelter for homeless, runaway or street children. Endowment grants are rare, as are matching or challenge grants. The foundation has a rather long list of activities it will not fund.

The foundation prefers short-term projects with clearly defined goals and measurable results. It has instituted a new online application process. Future support should never be assumed once a grant has been awarded. The program’s website (www.stkfoundation.org) offers additional details.
