walmart logoFoundation: Walmart Foundation; Program: Community Grants; Funding Focus: Education, workforce, environment, health; Geographic Focus: National; Eligibility: 501(c)(3) nonprofits (projects addressing education and nutrition are encouraged); Funding: Multiple awards of up to $2,500 each (the foundation made $166 million in grants last year); Deadline: Dec. 31.

Summary: Through the program, grants of up to $2,500 are awarded to local nonprofit organizations within the service area of individual Walmart stores in support of its initiatives. The foundation focuses funding on four areas: (1) hunger relief & healthy eating (including programs for childhood nutrition); (2) environmental sustainability to reduce waste and promote energy efficiency in communities; (3) women’s economic empowerment; and (4) career opportunity (workforce development for workers with low to moderate skills).

Walmart is specifically interested in applications from K-12 public or private schools, charter schools and church or other faith-based organizations with a proposed project that benefits the community at large.

Other Grants

These are different from the state/regional project grants. That grantmaking process is significantly changed this year compared to previous years. For states, the Sustainability and Women’s Economic Empowerment categories have been eliminated and replaced by the Community Engagement category. Another change is the creation of application cycles. All states have two application cycles. Each state is assigned to either application cycles 1 and 3 or application cycles 2 and 4. Organizations may only apply for funding in the designated cycles assigned to their state (http://tinyurl.com/avgxdw5). Walmart also makes National Grants, which help organizations be operating on a national scale at multiple sites across the U.S; rolling deadlines; awards up to $250,000 each.
