Transportation Foundation Rolls Out Community Grants Competition

Foundation: American Airlines Community Foundation (formerly America West Community Foundation); Opportunity: 2017 Foundation grants; Funding Focus: Children, health, and human services; Geographic Focus: Where the company has hubs (Charlotte, SC; Philadelphia; Phoenix; and Washington, DC); Eligibility: Nonprofits; Funding: Varies (the foundation distributed about $10 million in grants last year); Deadline: Oct. 1.

Summary: The program awards financial support to qualified children’s programs and initiatives addressing the needs of the disadvantaged and enhancing human services.

Priority goes to the cities of Dallas, Miami, Chicago, Phoenix, Washington, DC, Philadelphia, Charlotte, NC, Los Angeles and Tulsa, OK. The airline’s collective humanitarian efforts provide assistance to eligible 501(c)(3) nonprofits whose missions aim to aid children, our military service members and those affected by unexpected adversity.  

support is provided in three ways:

  • In-kind contributions: American donates to nonprofit organizations in the form of AAdvantage mileage certificates.
  • Volunteerism: Employees give back to their communities by volunteering in projects through our volunteer program, Do Crew.
  • Cash support: There are limited opportunities to receive a cash contribution.
