Funders: Nat’l Football League (NFL) Youth Football Fund and the Local Initiatives Support Corp.; Opportunity: 2017 NFL Youth Football Fund Grassroots Program; Funding Focus: Physical activity, youth, children; Geographic Focus: National; Eligibility: 501 (c)(3) nonprofits and middle/high schools in NFL markets and serving low-income children and youth; Funding: Multiple awards up to $50,000 each for General Field Support Grants and Field Surface Grants ranging from $100,000 to $200,000 each (dollar-for-dollar match required); Deadline: TBA (last year’s deadline was Aug. 16).

Summary: The program provides financial and technical assistance to nonprofits working to improve youth football fields in low- and moderate-income neighborhoods.

General Field Support Grants go for capital projects not associated with the actual field surface, such as installation and refurbishment of bleachers and concession stands. Field Surface Grants offers matching grants up to $200,000 to resurface community, middle school or high school football fields and the installation of synthetic sports turf. Matching grants up to $100,000 each are also available to resurface fields using natural grass and sod surfaces.

Strong preference ise given to those proposals that (1) seek to upgrade existing facilities that are in poor condition or otherwise underutilized; (2) demonstrate active use of the fields; (3) attract matching funding that exceeds the minimum required match of 1:1; (4) involve local partnerships with non-profit community partners (e.g., USA Football, Parks and Recreation Departments, YMCA branches, etc.) to promote youth sports safety and community programming on the fields; (5) provide for continuing maintenance and field safety; and (6) involve youth football programs that are currently registered and in line with USA Football Heads Up Football safety initiatives.
