Wellness, Community Service Grants are Priorities for Health Foundation

Private Funder: Anthem Foundation; Opportunity: 2017 grants; Funding Focus: Health & community services; Geographic Focus: The 25 states where it has a presence (see below); Eligibility: Nonprofits, schools, governments and faith-based groups; Funding: Varies (the foundation made $12 million in grants last year); Deadline: Sept. 1.

Summary: Most giving involves its Healthy Generations grant program, a multi-generational health initiative that promotes healthy behaviors, health-risk prevention, and healthy environments. Priority goes to projects that can demonstrate measurable results. All grantees are required to comply with results reporting at the end of their grant terms. Some mandatory interim reporting may also be required, often to ensure subsequent funding installments should continue. The foundation’s grantmaking focus is on initiatives that positively affect the conditions addressed in its Healthy Generations program: cardiac mortality; cancer prevention and smoking cessation; maternal and newborn health; diabetes prevention and management; and childhood obesity.

Youth groups have benefited. The foundation gave $207,000 to the Los Angeles Lakers Youth Foundation for Healthy Generations-Youth Health Promotion.
