Summary: The NBF makes grants to literacy and basic education programs focusing on: basic literacy; adult basic education; GED instruction, English language instruction; and family literacy. Since its inception in 1995, ProLiteracy’s Nat’l Book Fund has awarded more than $2.9 million in grants, helping more than 305,000 adults, youth, and children improve their reading skills. Schools have won support for on-site reading programs.
The NBF does not award grants to individuals. In the FY 2013 competition, $20,000 in NBF funds were reserved for organizations providing literacy services to homeless individuals. Priority goes to those providing literacy instruction at no charge to participating students.
